SGC Projects

The SGC provides a number of services for the Somerset community. The beautiful flowers and shrubs that you see in the flower hayracks and light standards as well as at various locations around town (such as the County Courthouse, the public library, town police/safety building, turnpike exit, and Borough building), are just some of the areas that benefit from the efforts of the SGC members. However, there are other programs that the Club undertakes, for example the following:

  • Garden Therapy at local nursing homes whereby members assist residents with floral displays for their rooms

  • Members of the Club’s Youth Gardening Committee work with children at the Children’s Aid Home on gardening and projects in the garden. While gardening, the children enjoy crafts and healthy snacks.

  • The Club awards annual scholarships ($500 - $1,000) to High School Senior, College, and post-graduate students pursuing a degree in agriculture or a related field.

  • SGC members participate in planting trees on Arbor Day.

  • Club members assist with the planting and cleaning of the flowers and shrubbery at the Laurel Arts Center.

  • The Club donates to a number of causes such as Trinity Park, Jager and Friends Dog Park, and the Forest Service’s Penny Pines project.

  • The Club holds monthly informational meetings on a variety of topics from water conservation to planning your Zone 5 garden or planting a garden that attracts pollinators. You do not have to be a member to attend these meetings.

  • Funds are raised for many of the projects through the annual plant sale, bulb sale, and Christmas wreath sale. Many of the plants at the plant sale are raised by SGC members.

  • The Club strives to spread the seeds of knowledge with the goal of protecting pollinators and native plants. The SGC attends events, such as Home and Garden Shows and Earth Day events, to display informational materials and provide handouts for attendees.
